accessible politicians: accessible websites

Never one to pass up an opportunity to hassle someone who deserves hassling, for once I'm going to do it about something important.

Website Accessibility.

I'm not going to rant. Just go here and read this. And then do what Pix says. It's easy. Trust me, I know.

So send a letter to your MP asking them to support this motion. And get all your friends, real or imaginary, to do so as well. Though I'm not sure what an Early Day Motion actually is. I assume it's not the sort of motion that I get first thing in the morning. Anyway, politicians can do important things. All you have to do is ask them once in a while. So get to it!

I got a politician's response to this. Essentially supportive, but not entirely committal.

So I will be checking that she does actually sign the EDM. Not that I don't trust her, of course. She's an MP after all. Any previous apparent u-turns (on various subjects such as Iraq, foxhunting and live music licensing) were probably oversights on her part. I'm sure she's a very Busyimportantperson.

Her response also said that she'd 'look at' her site again. This is not only 'aninterestingturnofphrase' given the subject matter of visual impairment, but also entirely unbelievable. I mean, the site is awful. It looks a mess. There's a noticeable absence of worthwhile content. In short, it's a total and utter waste of webspace. I know that any blind or VI person has as much right to be as appalled and patronised by a shitty website as anyone else, but perhaps deleting this site would just be better for everyone.
